Calling ALL Women of America: Unite For This One Issue: RAPE
I want to call upon ALL WOMEN OF AMERICA. Democrats, Republicans, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Progressives, Liberals, Conservatives, Straights, Lesbians: Every Woman of America. Let me say something here. There is one thing that unites us: Rape. Rapists don’t ask us about our beliefs or orientation before they rape us. They don’t care what we believe. Rape is not about sex. Rape is about male power and domination. It is about Hatred of women. It is a mental illness. I don’t hate men- I love men- most men are honorable and hate rape as much as we do. But I hate rapists. And I doubly hate the intimidation tactics that are used on women after they have been raped. I also hate how political parties try to use women as if we are children. Lastly, I hate that the legal system prevents us from ending rape effectively.
Listen, did you know that we outnumber men in America? Do you understand our political power in this nation? All we have to do is vote together and we can do anything we want! All we have to do is agree on something and it is ours. Ending rape is something every one of us wants for ourselves and our daughters.
I am sickened that women are called ‘liars’, ‘whores’, ‘attention seekers’ (as if we are little girls looking for our daddies’ attention!), gold diggers (as if we can’t supply our own needs!) when we dare to tell the truth about our rapes. Especially against powerful men. The law is against us! The law tells us that if we don’t report our rape after a certain number of years, then the rape didn’t happen! However, if we dare to even speak publicly about our true stories for the rest of our lives & our rapists don’t like it, they can sue us for millions of dollars! Imagine that! And we can’t
counter sue them if our story is found true in the same courtroom! Is that justice?
Further, it is very expensive to even fight such a lawsuit. If the man is rich, he can frivolously level such a lawsuit and if the woman is poor, then she can’t even pay for a defense- then his revenge is complete, indeed. We, the one whom he raped, will owe him millions of dollars for the rest of our lives, simply because we can’t find over $100,000 to defend ourselves in court against his dirty lawyers! Believe me, I looked everywhere for a lawyer to take my case pro bono- ha! Every defense lawyer wanted at least $20- $30 thousand dollars up front to even look at my case. And the court won’t allow us to get that money back when we win the suit! It is lost forever. So, winning is still losing- and our rich, powerful rapist can still lick the cream off his whiskers! This is called intimidation. It is to silence you and me, Women of America. And it works. It works well.
I ask you: “Is that justice in America?”
More importantly: Is that moral?
Why can’t Women counter-sue for pain and suffering if we win a defamation lawsuit against our rapist? Why can’t we retrieve our lawyer fees if we win? Why are we hampered with a statute of limitation but our rapists aren’t? Men will not fear suing us as long as they don’t fear a lawsuit in response should they lose. In this way, they have legal power to keep us effectively silent. They don’t have to worry about sullying their ‘good’ name after they have sullied our pure bodies. Is that justice?
Personally, I don’t believe in defamation lawsuits in general- they are a waste of time for our nations- most nations have stricken these laws from their books as such. So should America. This is the easiest path for us, as Women. We must strike defamation suits from our laws. We have free speech- let us speak- let our rapists speak. That is fine with me. If they are telling the truth, then let people believe them. I don’t fear the truth or public opinion, do you? Only criminals fear words. I say, allow me to tell my truth about my rape- let my rapist tell whatever he wants. Let the world decide what it wants. Why does he fear this so much if he is telling the truth? Why does he seek the legal system to silence me publicly? What does he fear? Why kill my free speech? Just because it offends him? People offend me all the time- there are at least three hate sites erected in my name! Can I seek the legal system to silence them? no. And I wouldn’t want to. This would stop being the America I love if I could. Let me ask you, “Why should rapists be allowed to stop Raped Women from merely speaking about their Rape??” Is that right?
Our SILENCE has allowed it to be against us. Our FEAR of being called all these NAMES has silenced us. Our FEAR of not being believed has silenced us.
WOMEN of AMERICA- forget my political or religious beliefs for just this one issue and I will forget yours. In this one matter, we must stand in solidarity. We must not become bargaining chips for politicians. No one owns us. We aren’t a ‘special interest group’. We are the majority of this great nation. Our will is THE will of this nation. What WE want is what we will get. By law. Let us combine our will power. I will stand for you in this mission when I stand in court. They will skewer me with all they have- they already are. I want you AT MY BACK. I want to FEEL you at my back. I won’t let them make this about politics. It will be about YOU and your voice. I promise.
Then, they will have to listen. We are the majority. Don’t forget that. No one owns us. Don’t forget that either.
No more rape. No more silence. No more names. No more intimidation. We are not victims. We are not sluts. We are not liars. We are women who have been attacked by vile men. And we demand justice with ONE VOICE. And by God, we will get it this time.
* special thank you to Project Unbreakable, from whence these images originate. Go to this remarkable project and give them your applause and support. It takes amazing courage for rape victims to come forward. I understand why some hid their faces. It took me many years to tell my rape story out loud to private individuals, more years to tell it to strangers. Even more to say it publicly. There are many men who were raped as boys. I invite these men to this fight as well. My heart is with you, my friends. For this one fight, let us put it all aside and love one another, shall we? We are all hurting inside. Perhaps, if we can love one another here, we will build understanding on other issues as well? I offer this olive branch….
